So with all the super or hypercar news on the frontpage it’s easy to forget about that NSX thingy. I don’t know if I’m late or early to the party but I just sat through a pretty boring Jay Leno’s Garage video about the new NSX that they put up today.

Lots of not very interesting talk with the lead designer, then the General Head of Stuff joins in to not give us any numbers but insist that they are right up there with the best.

And through all of this, the one thing that bugs me most is that Acura badge. This thing just needs a proper Honda badge on it. Same for the old one.

Otherwise, if you manage to get past the snoozefest that is the walkaround of the car in the garage, it does actually look pretty damn good out and about on the streets. Once again, I might be late to the party on the NSX but I do hope it sells well enough to keep it around for a while.

Right, I do not know why the video displayed fine while composing but not with the post up and I do not Kinja enough to find the edit button...

So let’s try it in a reply:

No matter how late you are to the party, the NSX will always be later.

Jay’s a great mechanical nerd but not an art/styling one, so when talking to someone on the design-side of cars, he kinda doesn’t know what to say. Once it moves on from talking with the designer and involves the engineer, it falls apart on the interviewee’s end. It sucks because someone on the artistic end, like the designer of the NSX seems to be, is most likely better with words than someone who works on the science and math end.

I know how it feels to be let down by an interview on Jay Leno’s Garage, since the guy who engineered my Focus ST looks and acts like a chiropractor, despite having made a really exciting car. Like with the NSX video, he was clearly excited about the car he made but he was excited in a “I did geometry and materials science to make this thing function the way I wanted it to” way and not a “I sculpted the shapes and forms of this object to express the way I feel about performance on an emotional level” way. Jay is the first kind of person, and he happens to be able to express things like the second kind of person does, sadly the vast majority of people are either/or.

I agree. I enjoyed the designer’s perspective since we don’t always here about it. The engineer was sort of a pain to watch. Just kept avoiding questions and no numbers at all.

Though I am inclined to agree with you, the combination of these mismatched personalities just makes the entire video seem like a big, boring, painful infomercial about the NSX.

It’s kind of a shame because I do really like the car and would like to hear some genuine enthusiasm instead of brochure terms about the trunk being designed to hold a golf bag.
